Kids’ Sports and Life Balance

– As Spring picks up, so do all the sports activities for your kids! We go from staying inside and hiding from the cold, to being pulled in multiple directions. This can create added stress on you and your family as a whole. Here we have provided some simple tips that can help keep your family chaos organized and keep the stress to a minimum.

Create a family calendar!

Put your calendar in a central location where all family members can review it. By placing all the week’s activities into one calendar, everyone will become informed of who needs to be where and what is expected of them. Kids can pace out their homework and other school commitments based on practice schedules. Parents can coordinate rides to and from practice, while keeping the kids in check. It is also recommended to have a weekly family meeting, towards the beginning of the week. That way you can review the calendar as a family, add any additional activities that were overlooked, and make sure everyone is on the same page.

Two words, meal prep!

Getting home cooked meals prepared during these crazy, busy days can be really challenging. Put together a meal plan at the beginning of the week, and go grocery shopping. Having all the ingredients on hand cuts down impromptu running to the store. Look for quick and easy meals with minimal ingredients; meals that can be prepared in 15-20 minutes max. Break out the crockpot! If you put all the ingredients into it in the morning, let it cook all day, then your meal will be ready to enjoy in the evening. It is recommended that you use a crockpot with a timer on it. That way your meal will not overcook if you are not able to get home in time to turn it off.

Build in some down time!

This sounds counter productive when all you are doing is running all over the place, but it’s important. Set aside time in the calendar to reconnect as a family; whether that’s a family game night, a short hiking trip, or simply gathering around the table to talk about the week. Reconnecting helps to refocus your purpose and reasoning behind this busy season. When we have a strong relationship with those around us, we tend to not feel so defeated by the calendar.

Lastly, carve out some personal time!
